Netflix adds Paramount, Lionsgate, and MGM to their streaming service!

August 11th, 2010 by Scott

For those of you know I’m a Netflix fan, well I just read an article that Netflix as has formed a partnership with MGM, Lionsgate, and Paramount Pictures!  What this means is users will now be able to stream moving made by these manufactures.  According to Mike the guy sitting next to me that includes all the Saw movies!  I’m a huge fan of Star Trek and that franchise falls under Paramount!

If you ask me, this is a pretty sweet deal.  Thanks Netflix and the studios involved for making this deal to happen.  It sounds like the movies will be made available on September 1st.  New movies will not be available until 90 days after they go on pay TV.  Either way, I’m happy!

BES 5.0 SP2 – reduction to disk I/O on Exchange!

July 30th, 2010 by Scott

As you may or may not know about 3 weeks ago RIM released SP2 for BES 5.0.  Since I have some clients that run BES I thought I would read through the release notes for SP2 and came across an interesting bullet:

  •  reduction to disk I/O — impact The BlackBerry Enterprise Server does not write updates for user statistics to mailboxes to reduce the load on the Microsoft® Exchange Server.

What does this mean?  Well, my guess is it reduces the disk I/O impact on Exchange servers!  As you may know in previous articles when building an Exchange environment you need to factor in an additional I/O on the disks of 3.64 (I like to round up to 4) for each BlackBerry Device in your organization.  Meaning if you have 100 BlackBerry’s you can expect to have an extra demand of 400 IOPS on your Storage platform.

Well, with this new fix with the “does not write updates for user statistics to mailboxes” I would have to assume that this would reduce that 3.64 number.  I have heard a rumor that this number has been reduced to 1.85 IOPS per device.

Considering I don’t have easy access to BES 5.0 SP2 I’m curious if anyone out there can confirm this?  Please comment if you have tested and confirm!

I looks like my server crashed at some point on Friday the 23rd of July.  Being out of town for the weekend I didn’t find out until now.

I apologize to all my fans, sorry for the inconvenience!

Connection woes…

June 14th, 2010 by Scott

It looks like at some point on Saturday my router started having problems with accepting connections on port 80, 443, and port 25.  Not sure what was occurring there, the firewall was not seeing any traffic on the above ports which made me place a support call to my provider.  Luckily I was home to discover the issue.

I apologize for any inconvenience for my readers out there.  No, I haven’t gone away, just having connection problems!

Looking for a Good Skate Sharpener?

March 2nd, 2010 by Scott

If anyone out there is like me and getting skates sharpened weekly or twice a week I would encourage you to take a look at the Wissota Skate Sharpener.  I recently purchased one a few weeks ago and have enjoyed it ever since.  My son who plays hockey is getting his skates sharpened at leased once if not two times a week and the run to the skate shop not to mention the $5 a visit was getting costly. According to the Wissota Web site it costs about 17 cents, yes $0.17 to sharpen one skate.  Can you say savings?  Well, insert the Wissota Skate Sharpener.  The machine is pretty easy to use.  I think the hardest part for me was to locate the crown.  That’s the point where the wheel on the sharpener will hollow out a good radius.  Yes, I’ve been reading up on Skate Sharpening.  Once there I am now able to sharpen my skates and my sons skates any day and time and it takes only a few minutes.  Much better then dropping them off at the skate shop and waiting hours, if not a day…..

Anyway, If anyone out there is looking for a good skate Sharpener I recommend the Wissota Skate Sharpener.  I was able to to go to the company and pick up mine but they do ship.  While I was there I got a great demonstration on how the machine worked and the Sales guy even gave me more instruction then I could possibly ask for. There is an instructional DVD included with the Machine along with a lot of extra pieces.  I didn’t have to buy any thing more to get the machine to work.

So, if you are looking for a skate sharpener take a look at their web site, Wissota Manufacturing Company.  And no, I’m not getting paid for this or getting something for free.  I am happy with their product and wanted to recommend it to anyone out there Looking for a good Skate Sharpening Machine.

My Client Visit Yesterday Part 1

February 11th, 2010 by Scott

So, I was out at a client site yesterday to review the work they have completed so far on their Exchange 2007 deployment.  There were two issues that we came across that were unique that I thought I would mention to the population out there.  Hopefully this information will be able to help someone.

The first problem I noticed was the error message that stated Exchange was not part of an active directory site.  This caused me to think, why would an error come up like this.  My first instinct was to do a Gpresult /r (Windows 2008) which listed out all the information about the computer and user.  The Computer said it belonged to the site Default-First-Site-Name.  Ok, so the server was recognizing that it was a member of the AD Site, but why was exchange balking at the issue?  Well, I asked the IT Admin to open up Active Directory Sites and Services and took a look in there.  Looking over AD Sites and Services I noted the client had only one site configured, Default-First-Site-Name.  Thinking a little bit more about the situation I asked to see what subnets were configured for the site.  Well, upon review the site only had two subnets assigned to it.  Neither one of these Subnets included the subnet Exchange 2007 was in.   Talking to the Admin about this I learned that they had the same issue on the Hub Transport Servers and had to manually configure AD using ADSIEdit to insert the proper site name for the server to use!  Eww, not sure how this will impact their environment in the long run but when installing Exchange this should all be done automatically.  So, I had the admin add the Subnet to the AD Sites and Services and rebooted the mailbox servers, error gone, problem solved!

The moral of the story above?  Make sure that you have your AD Sites and Services properly configured prior to deploying Exchange.  Oh yea, don’t forget, you need to have a domain Controller in the same AD Site as Exchange.  How the client ever got Exchange working is beyond me.  The workstation was seeing the AD Site but Exchange was not, hence the error.

CUCI-MOC

October 14th, 2009 by Scott

Recently I have been working on getting an integration of Cisco UC Integration for Microsoft Office Communicator. Well, it turns out there is an issue with Windows 7 and the version of CUCI we are using with is 7.1.2. When trying to dial a number I am receiving an error that states “Phone Error.  Could not place call because you have no audio device or sound card.  This error is being generated directly from CUCI. Cisco is aware of the problem and plans to have it resolved in CUCI version 8.0 which is due out some time in Q4 or Q1.

Welcome!

After much time I finally got this thing up and running!

A bit about myself,

I primarily work around Active Directory, Exchange, SharePoint, OCS just to name a few.  I have been working with these technologies for a number of years.  I’m happy to finally have a blog up and will be posting additional content in the near future!
