Updates and Outage

January 9th, 2012 by

I took the liberty of performing some updates to my Blog today. As a result I had a service outage and the permalinks to my articles broke. The issue should be resolved but there may be some issues when performing look up via Google and Bing. I’ll keep an eye on it and see what happens.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Just as a note, some of the search

Just as a note, some of the search enginges are inserting .com/index.php/whatever.  The new method after my upgrade changed it to .com/blog.whatever.  So if you are here looking for something replace the index.php with blog and you should get to your site.

Google+ available on the iPhone

July 19th, 2011 by

I happened to get an alert on my iPhone from AppsFire that Google+ is available for the iPhone.  I took a look and sure enough, I found it!

One thing I noticed that if I try to share a comment my iphone won’t flip the key board.  Bummer!  I like to flip my iphone to enlarge the keyboard.  My guess is just a Bug.

I also found a news article regarding the Google+ iPhone app on the NYTs

Here is the Picture of the icon for the iPhone

Pretty Basic but it works.

I am actually happy to see the app come out as I was just talking about how it would be nice to get an actual App instead of having to go through Safari for my Google+ access.

My thoughts on Google+ so far?  What I do like about it is that I have my circles.  These circles allow me to choose who I publish (stream) my content to.  I can make a post to an individual by specifying their name or to my circle of friends, or my circle of family etc etc etc.  Other than that I haven’t really played around with Google+

I would be happy to hear anyone’s experiences with Google+ thus far.  But either way, check it out!

Netflix is raising prices! – Urgh!

July 12th, 2011 by

I got an email yesterday from Netflix.  They have decided to raise their prices.  You will no longer be able to stream all the movies you want and get x amount of DVDs in one plan.  Here is the email I received:

We are separating unlimited DVDs by mail and unlimited streaming into two separate plans to better reflect the costs of each. Now our members have a choice: a streaming only plan, a DVD only plan, or both.

Your current $xx.xx a month membership for unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs will be split into 2 distinct plans:

Plan 1: Unlimited Streaming (no DVDs) for $7.99 a month
Plan 2: Unlimited DVDs, 3 out at-a-time (no streaming) for $15.99 a month

Your price for getting both of these plans will be $23.98 a month ($7.99 + $15.99). You don’t need to do anything to continue your memberships for both unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs.

These prices will start for charges on or after September 1, 2011.

You can easily change or cancel your unlimited streaming plan, unlimited DVD plan, or both, by going to the Plan Change page in Your Account.

We realize you have many choices for home entertainment, and we thank you for your business. As always, if you have questions, please feel free to call us at 1-888-357-1516.

Bugger.  My thought here is that they are trying to get more revenue to stream more.  As long as I have a better selection (Dexter *cough* *cough*) and other shows I can be ok with this change, but if they are planning to remove shows then I will only be more upset!

guess time will tell.

Update:  Here is the official Blog post: http://blog.netflix.com/2011/07/netflix-introduces-new-plans-and.html

April 20th, 2011 by

Over the past few months, yes months, I have been working on moving my Blog over to a new server.  I’m happy to say that I have finally moved the blog to a new server.

After working on this thing I think I got it up and working!  Hopefully the performance will be better now.

Security Breach with SecurID

March 18th, 2011 by

There are reports on the net today that SecurID has had a security breach.  What exactly was taken and how this will impact end users isn’t exactly clear.  It sounds like the information stolen doesn’t enable a direct attack on SecuID customers but “could potentially be used to reduce the effectiveness of a current two-factor authentication implementation as part of a broader attack.”

More information can be found on the following news links:

Spammers sending emails spoofing LinkedIn….User beware!

September 30th, 2010 by

In the past week I have been receiving a ton of emails from LinkedIn, or is it.  Looking at the email I noticed that I have an invitation from some random user that is trying to take me to a site that is not related to LinkedIn.  It is actually pretty interesting, I’m setting

From: Linkedin Communcations
Subject: LinkedIn Messages.

When looking at the content of the email it is telling me that I have a friend request from some random user who I have never heard of before.  Needless to say, I have been ignoring these emails and deleting them.

Just be careful out there, I found an article out there today Spammers try to dupe LinkedIn users in Zeus attack. From the article:

“The combination of extremely high volume and the focus on business users suggests the attackers are interested in employees with access to online bank accounts,” said Stern. “We’ve provided LinkedIn with the information they need to take action against the spammers.”

When clicking on the link provided in the email it takes you to a website where you can accidently download a Trojan horse.

Again, check out the article for more info: Spammers try to dupe LinkedIn users in Zeus attack and remember to always be careful what links you click on in your emails!

Netflix adds Paramount, Lionsgate, and MGM to their streaming service!

August 11th, 2010 by

For those of you know I’m a Netflix fan, well I just read an article that Netflix as has formed a partnership with MGM, Lionsgate, and Paramount Pictures!  What this means is users will now be able to stream moving made by these manufactures.  According to Mike the guy sitting next to me that includes all the Saw movies!  I’m a huge fan of Star Trek and that franchise falls under Paramount!

If you ask me, this is a pretty sweet deal.  Thanks Netflix and the studios involved for making this deal to happen.  It sounds like the movies will be made available on September 1st.  New movies will not be available until 90 days after they go on pay TV.  Either way, I’m happy!

BES 5.0 SP2 – reduction to disk I/O on Exchange!

July 30th, 2010 by

As you may or may not know about 3 weeks ago RIM released SP2 for BES 5.0.  Since I have some clients that run BES I thought I would read through the release notes for SP2 and came across an interesting bullet:

  •  reduction to disk I/O — impact The BlackBerry Enterprise Server does not write updates for user statistics to mailboxes to reduce the load on the Microsoft® Exchange Server.

What does this mean?  Well, my guess is it reduces the disk I/O impact on Exchange servers!  As you may know in previous articles when building an Exchange environment you need to factor in an additional I/O on the disks of 3.64 (I like to round up to 4) for each BlackBerry Device in your organization.  Meaning if you have 100 BlackBerry’s you can expect to have an extra demand of 400 IOPS on your Storage platform.

Well, with this new fix with the “does not write updates for user statistics to mailboxes” I would have to assume that this would reduce that 3.64 number.  I have heard a rumor that this number has been reduced to 1.85 IOPS per device.

Considering I don’t have easy access to BES 5.0 SP2 I’m curious if anyone out there can confirm this?  Please comment if you have tested and confirm!

DOH!

July 26th, 2010 by

I looks like my server crashed at some point on Friday the 23rd of July.  Being out of town for the weekend I didn’t find out until now.

I apologize to all my fans, sorry for the inconvenience!

Connection woes…

June 14th, 2010 by

It looks like at some point on Saturday my router started having problems with accepting connections on port 80, 443, and port 25.  Not sure what was occurring there, the firewall was not seeing any traffic on the above ports which made me place a support call to my provider.  Luckily I was home to discover the issue.

I apologize for any inconvenience for my readers out there.  No, I haven’t gone away, just having connection problems!
